London: E. Newbery, 1781. First edition, Forbes's state C. Exact priority among the four states has not been established. 8vo xlvi, 388 pp. Contemporary half calf, flat spine; joints skillfully - almost invisibly - repaired. Folding map (small tear repaired), engraved frontispiece; five engraved plates including the death of Captain Cook. Small paper defect or repair to title page corner. Basically a fine copy. Rickman, who was a second lieutenant aboard the Discovery, despite Captain King's confiscation of all sailors' logs, journals, maps, and drawings, managed to retain a copy of his journal. It was first published, anonymously to prevent his prosecution, in London in 1781, and is the first book published in English about Cook's third voyage and an important supplement to the official account, which was not published until 1784. The frontispiece is the first published graphic representation of Hawaii. Forbes 33. Item #33045
