PROBABLY ONE OF THE LAST LETTERS HANDWRITTEN BY HART CRANE

Autograph letter signed, ("Harold") to Betty M. Crane, 7 April 1932

1932. To Betty M. Crane, stepmother of Hart Crane ('Dear Bess”), Mixcoac, [Mexico], 7 April ’32 [1932], 4to, fragile tissue, in pencil, and accompanying envelope addressed to Bess Crane. . “Dear Bess: Your letter telling about the accident reached me day before yesterday. It was indeed a terrible story and I'm sure you've been worn to a frazzle and it will be long before you fully recover-to say nothing of poor Dorothy! I think her recovery at all is a perfect miracle. As soon as I can get my typewriter out of the repair shop I'll write at more length, including a letter to Dorothy. No money has reached my bank as yet, though your letter including receipt for me to sign came today. Apparently you had the address alright, etc. Maybe forgot to mail it. I've spent most of the last seven days running around town trying to borrow money just for our food. The light has been turned off, and it all has been most embarrassing. In foreign countries when money is not sent according to schedule all sorts of things may happen. I may even be deported in a few days for lack of funds to pay on the renewal of my passport here, which fell due on April 1st Borrowing money and the incidentals to getting it, of course always costs something. I'm afraid I shall have to ask for the entire $166. This month after all. So if you can send me the difference-or $41. during the next 2 weeks I shall be extremely obliged. I don't yet know entirely what my passport renewal will cost. We haven't even enough on hand to telegraph you at present. Did you send the check registered mail? I'll call again at the bank tomorrow morning-and if its there by that time I'll certainly relax somewhat...." Item #32728
