London: Hogarth Press, 1949. First edition. Original mauve cloth, gilt. Slight lean, else a fine copy in dust jacket designed by Duncan Grant. The only novel by the sister of James and Lytton Strachey, based on her experience while a student at the Marie Souvestre girls' school, as well as viewing of the film "Mädchen in Uniform" (1931).
Author Hope Mirrlees's copy, with her signature, and with a contemporaneous two-page a.l.s. to her from Bussy in which she tells about writing "Olivia": "The only part that was difficult to do was the construction, the shape of the story, the placing of the characters, and no doubt a long study of French 'rècits' guided me in that. If one succeeds there, feelings, emotions, etc. come through more easily -- the subjective as you say." Item #32312
